Stanley Asumnu Named as Assistant Basketball Coach at UA Cossatot
August 03, 2022
UA Cossaot announces the hiring of Stanley Asumnu as the new Assistant Basketball Coach of the UA Cossatot Colts. Coach Asumnu comes to Southwest Arkansas from Texas A&M International University in Laredo, TX, where he spent the 2021-22 basketball season as the assistant coach for the Dustdevils women's basketball squad.
Born and raised in Houston, Asumnu graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Management with a minor in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee, where he played basketball and football for the Volunteers. As a basketball player, Asumnu was known for his defensive skills. In his four years at UT, Asumnu appeared in 113 games, 33 as a starter, including 15 in his senior season of 2005-06, when the Volunteers finished as the SEC East champs, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and were ranked #18 in the final AP top 25 poll. Asumnu wore the #3 on his jersey to signify the three Bible passages he read before every game (Psalm 23, Matthew 6:33, and James 4:6).
From 2007-2012, Asumnu played professionally, primarily in the NBA G-League for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, with one season spent in Australia with the Sandringham Sabres.
Before coaching at TAMIU, Asumnu was the varsity first assistant coach for Sharyland High School in Mission, Texas. He implemented principles from his select traveling basketball team program, Valley Rebels Elite. Through both his positions, he provided individualized training, development, and preparation for collegiate-level basketball programs.
Asumnu is committed to inspiring on and off the court and has been involved with several community events such as youth basketball clinics, player appearances, and charity events working with kids with disabilities. His motto in life is "you must expect great things of yourself before you can do them," from basketball legend Michael Jordan.
When asked about the addition of Asumnu to his staff, UA Cossatot Head Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Bryant Pagan II said, "We are more than ecstatic to welcome Coach Stanley Asumnu to our coach staff and our Colts & Lady Colts Family. I believe that he will be a sensational asset for us here for years to come, with his exuberant spirit and passion for all the encompassing factors of coaching college basketball."
UA Cossatot Chancellor Dr. Steve Cole said, "Coach Asumnu is a home run for our program, plain and simple. He brings an incredible wealth of basketball knowledge to us that will help keep our program on its upward trajectory. He is also all about family and we know he, Danielle, and little Izaiah will fit perfectly into our community."
