CCCUA Sets Up Partial Tuition Waiver For Military Personnel
13 December 2004
DE QUEEN – Military personnel based in Arkansas have something extra under the tree to cheer about this year. Interim Resolution 2003-09 encourages all institutions of higher education to participate in the partial tuition waiver program for members of the Arkansas National Guard and the Reserves who are pursuing undergraduate studies.
Sponsored by Rep. Tommy Roebuck, the Resolution was adopted September 29 by the Arkansas House Interim Committees on Aging, Children and Youth, and Military and Legislative Affairs, and the Arkansas Senate Interim Committee on Children and Youth. Thirteen higher education institutions are named in the resolution, which was forwarded after its adoption to the state’s other institutions, including CCCUA, for adoption by their various Boards. The Resolution was adopted by the CCCUA Board of Visitors at its meeting on November 29.
The partial waiver applies to active military and National Guard members as well as honorably discharged veterans and their immediate families. It will be effective for spring 2005 registration, which begins at CCCUA’s De Queen campus on Thursday, January 6, 2005 at 9AM.
Chancellor Frank Adams said, “We wanted to recognize all of the economic, emotional and physical sacrifices our troops are making to serve their country in faraway places where life is difficult at best. We felt that the best way for us to support them and their families was to make it less of a financial strain to earn a degree or certificate. This approval comes at a time of year when families should be together. We know that with the reduction in income some of our military families have had to take while they are stationed elsewhere, Christmas may be rather tight this year. We felt that releasing this news now, at Christmastime, would be a welcome bit of relief, and something that would give military families more hope for the future.”
Financial Aid Director Denise Hammond said, “We have the forms available, either by mail from the Financial Aid Office, or on our website at cccua.edu. We will be set up at spring registration to receive the applications from students as they register for classes, so we want to get the word out before Christmas. That way, they will have all of the required paperwork ready to turn in when registration begins on January 6th.” Qualified applicants can call the Financial Aid Office at 800-844-4471 to request a form by mail or to find out more about the waiver program.
Cossatot Community College offers both technical certification and Associate’s degrees in a wide range of fields on its campus at De Queen, at extension sites at Nashville and Ashdown, and at cccua.edu. It has an enrollment of more than 1,000 students, and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
