CCCUA Online Registration Up 5%
09 November 2004
DE QUEEN – Steve Cole, Chair of the Division of Distance, Adult and Continuing Education at Cossatot Community College of the University of Arkansas, has announced that total enrollment in online classes at the College is up 5% for the Fall 2004 semester. This fall’s enrollment was 513, up from fall 2003’s enrollment of 489. The College’s total enrollment for fall 2004 is 1067, up from 1062 in 2003.
Cole added, “We have students registered in 51 sections of various online courses, and the registration number means that our students are taking an average of just over two online classes each.” He noted that the 5% growth in total online enrollment was complemented by at 15% surge in online enrollment from outside the College’s service area. One hundred two students are out-of-area registrants this year, compared with 87 last year. “People in other states are beginning to realize that we offer an online experience that is as good or better than what they can get locally, and get it at a significantly reduced cost.”
Cole said that, in addition to surging online numbers, the College is experiencing rapid growth in the numbers of students who are taking classes via interactive television. “We have two sets of A-V labs at our three sites,” he said. “The popularity of the courses that we are offering through interactive TV shows us that we are moving in the right direction with this form of instruction, not only for our own students, but for students who are taking distance classes from (U of A) Fayetteville, UALR, Henderson, and Texas A&M (at Texarkana). “All told, internet and A-V, we have 627 students out of our total of 1067 using some form of distance education to earn their degrees. That says a lot about where the future of higher education lies, and the proactive and effective approach the faculty and staff at CCCUA are taking to make it happen for the people in our service area,” he concluded.
Cossatot Community College offers both technical certification and Associate’s degrees in a wide range of fields on its campus at De Queen, at extension sites at Nashville and Ashdown, and at cccua.edu. It has an enrollment of more than 1,000 students, and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
