Good Turnout For National Depression Screening Day Event
at CCCUA
08 October 2004
DE QUEEN – More than three dozen people attended the
National Depression Screening Day event held at the De Queen campus of Cossatot
Community College of the University of Arkansas on Thursday, October 7. The
event was co-sponsored by Daryl Mitchell, a local Licensed Clinical Social
Worker in private practice, and CCCUA with assistance from Mike Cluts, De
Queen Clinic Director for Southwest Arkansas Counseling and Mental Health.
The event is promoted by the National Depression Screening Day Foundation
and several major pharmaceutical manufacturers and is directed at helping
people identify whether they are in need of counseling or other mental health
services.
Mitchell said, “We had this event at my office last year, and we realized
quickly that we needed more space, and the College was kind enough to not
only provide the space, but the help of students in the LPN and Medical Assisting
programs, which made things run much more smoothly.” Participants filled
out an anonymous form, which was scored by the students and then referred
to Mitchell, Cluts and Barentine, who helped determine if further assistance
was warranted. Videos were available for viewing and each participant received
resources information. “About half of the people who attended yesterday
were in genuine need of some help,” Barentine said, “but they
had no idea where to turn, so this event was very helpful in terms of providing
them with some guidance."
Cossatot Community College offers both technical certification and Associate’s
degrees in a wide range of fields on its campus at De Queen, at extension
sites at Nashville and Ashdown, and at cccua.edu. It has an enrollment of
more than 1,000 students, and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission
of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools..
