Wildland Firefighting Course Set for Oct. 7
05 October 2004
DE QUEEN – James Tornabene, Fire Science Instructor at
the De Queen Branch of the Arkansas Fire Academy, has announced that the 4-hour
“Wildland Fire” course that is taught by the Arkansas Department
of Forestry will be offered via interactive video at CCCUA’s De Queen
campus and Nashville and Ashdown Extensions on Thursday, October 7. The class
will begin at 6:30PM.
Tornabene said, “This is one of the three classes firefighters need
to become certified so their local departments can receive state 833 (training)
money.” He explained that “the 833 money comes from everyone’s
homeowners insurance, and goes into a fund to be split up among the counties
by population. Then each county has the freedom to distribute it among all
of the departments as it sees fit. Sevier County splits it up evenly, though
some counties split it up by population.” He added that this money forms
most of the income for some of the smaller departments.
For more information, contact Tornabene at 800-844-4471, Ext. 130.
