National Depression Screening Day Set For October 7
at CCCUA-De Queen
29 September 2004
DE QUEEN – Counselor Edie Barentine has announced
that the College, in conjunction with the Southwest Arkansas Mental Health
Clinic, will host a free event in conjunction with National Depression Screening
Day on Thursday, October 7. The event will be held from 9AM to 6PM in the
Testing Center, located in the Donn Allison Technology Center on the College’s
De Queen campus. The public is invited.
Barentine said, “If a person is screened in time, signs and symptoms
can be used as a means of identifying the right kind of treatment, and people
can avoid letting the problems get the best of them in their personal and
professional lives.” She noted that the screening involves individuals
completing an anonymous form, which will be interpreted by mental health professionals
who will be available that day to provide guidance and give information about
area resources to help with whatever problems may be discovered as a result
of the screening.
“This is not a time for therapy or counseling,” Barentine said.
“It is provided for the purpose of preventive education, to make early
interventions, and to refer people who need further information or assistance
to the right resources.”
She added that the confidential and anonymous information will contribute
to a national research project on the mental health of citizens of the United
States.
Cossatot Community College offers both technical certification and Associate’s
degrees in a wide range of fields on its campus at De Queen, at extension
sites at Nashville and Ashdown, and at cccua.edu. It has an enrollment of
more than 1,000 students, and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission
of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
