DE QUEEN – Kristin Bowden, Vice Chancellor at Cossatot Community College of the University of Arkansas, announced today that the College has received official notification of the accreditation of its Associate of Science degree program from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (HLC-NCA). The College also recently learned from HLC-NCA that it has been reaccredited for the next ten years. First accredited by NCA in 1998, its next comprehensive evaluation is scheduled for the 2012-2013 academic year. Ten years is the longest time between reviews that is allowed by the accrediting body.
“We are very excited about our A.S. degree being accredited,” said Bowden. “Having this program will enable our students to go directly into a Bachelor of Science program at a four-year institution if they decide that’s what they want to do. Community colleges are all about access, and adding the A.S. degree is one more way we are striving to provide that access.”
Bowden went on to recap the degrees the College offers that have been accredited by HLC-NCA, and provided some details on future developments. The College is currently accredited for the granting of Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science, and Associate of General Studies. The Associate of General Studies degree is also accredited for 100% online delivery. The 100% online Associate of Arts degree is scheduled for approval by the Arkansas Department of Higher Education on August 1, and is under review by HLC-NCA, with a decision expected early in 2004. “We have been watching what other top schools in the country are doing, and we feel very strongly that online education is going to play a crucial role in the lives of our students, particularly those living in rural areas. That’s why we are working so diligently toward getting as many of our degrees approved for 100% online delivery as we can,” she concluded.
Cossatot Community College offers both technical certification and Associate’s degrees in a wide range of fields on its campus at De Queen, at extension sites at Nashville and Ashdown, and at cccua.edu. It has an enrollment of more than 1,000 students, and is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools’ Commission on Higher Learning.
