Local Sculptor’s Work To Be Auctioned
05 April 2005

DE QUEEN – Area residents will have the opportunity to own a unique piece of original art, as well as contribute to a wonderful cause. Laura Brand, a noted sculptor and art teacher at Cossatot Community College of the University of Arkansas, has created a one-of-a-kind sculpture commemorating those who have battled cancer. The sculpture, crafted from lustrous black soapstone, consists of two hands designed to fit around a candle. On each hand is a wristband. The left wristband reads, “In Remembrance,” and memorializes those who have lost the battle with cancer. The right wristband reads, “Preserving the Light,” and is dedicated to those who have survived or are still battling the disease.

Each hand is slightly less than 12 inches in length and weighs about eight pounds. One stone has a mineral deposit creating a natural flaw, common in soapstone, adding to the overall beauty of the piece. The sculpture is signed, and no others will be created with this exact design.

Brand is an award-winning artist whose work has appeared in prestigious art galleries, and has been exhibited in numerous public and private institutions. She has placed the work on Ebay, and bidding will end April 15. All proceeds from the sculpture will go to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

More information may be obtained at the Ebay Web site, www.ebay.com; search for item number 5379682392.
